北涼天竺三藏曇無讖譯
寶幢分第九魔苦品第一
[0129a06] 爾時,世尊故在欲色二界中間大寶坊中,與諸眷屬圍繞說法,告大眾言:「我昔初得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提時,住王舍城迦蘭陀長者竹林。爾時城中有二智人:一名、優波提舍;二名、拘律陀;具足成就十八種術,五百弟子常相隨逐。是時,二人各相謂言:『若有先得甘露味者,要當相惠。』
At that time, the Bhagvān was dwelling between the desire and form realms within the region of Mahāratna (Great Jewel), while expounding the Dharma to various encircling attendants. Toward the Great Assembly, He said:
“When I had long first attained anuttara samyaksambodhi, I was dwelling within Rājagṛha within the bamboo grove of the Elder of Kalandaka.
At that time and within that city, there were two wise men: the first was named, Upadeśa, and the second, *Kolita; who both had fully achieved eighteen kinds of skills, and after the characteristics of which their five-hundred disciples had constantly sought.
At that time, those two men spoke to each other, saying: “if it were the former whom attained the flavour of amṛta, then the characteristics would necessarily be granted.”
「時有比丘名曰馬星,於其晨朝從禪定起,入王舍城次第乞食。憂波提舍中路遙見馬星比丘,即作是念:『我久住是王舍城中,初未曾見若人沙門、婆羅門等威儀庠序如此人者。我當往問所事何師?從誰受法?』時憂波提舍即往趣彼馬星比丘,作如是言:『比丘!汝師是誰?從誰受法?』馬星答言:『善男子!有釋迦牟尼如來大士,勝諸出家、無上之尊、已度生死獲得解脫、能度一切無量眾生,名之為佛。能悟眾生,善作諸行能乾苦河,具足成就如是等法,即是我師,我從受法。』
At that time there was a bhikṣu named Aśvinī-Nakṣatra (Horse Star), who at dawn, arose from dhyāna, and entered Rājagṛha for alms. Upadeśa saw the bhikṣu Aśvinī on the middle of the road, and then thought:
“I have long indeed stayed within Rājagṛha, but I have never seen any śramaṇa, brahman, or so forth, whom has ever been as stately and dignified as this man. I should go and ask him under which teacher he had trained, from whom he had received such Dharma.”
Then, Upadeśa went toward the bhikṣu Aśvinī and spoke to him so:
“Bhikṣu! Who is your teacher? From whom did you receive such Dharma?”
Aśvinī then replied to him, saying:
“Good son! There is a Great Man, Śākyamuni Tathāgata, superior among all renunciants, unexcelled in honour, One Who has crossed beyond birth-and-death and attained liberation, Who is the saviour of all the countless sentient beings, and Whose name is the Buddha.
He is able to understand sentient beings, and had skilfully undertaken the various practices able to cross one over the river of suffering, and He had fully achieved this kind of Dharma. He is my teacher, Whom I had received such Dharma.”
[0129a23] 「憂波提舍言:『汝師常說何等法義?』『善男子!汝今諦聽。我當為汝分別解說。法從緣生,通達是因,因緣滅故,即是寂靜。世間即苦,苦因名集,若修八正,世間集滅。若無苦集,我師說言,名為涅槃。善男子!我師唯說如是等法。』
Upadeśa said:
“
