Mahāsamāja Sūtra

The Translation

evaṁ mayā śrutam |

Thus have I heard,

ekasmiṁ samaye bhagavāṁ śākyeṣu viharati vane kāpilavastave sārdham pañcabhir bhikṣuśataiḥ sarvair arhadbhiḥ kṣīṇāsravaiḥ kṛtakṛyaiḥ kṛtakaraṇīyair avahṛtabhārair anuprāptasvakārthaiḥ parikṣīṇabhavasaṁyojanaiḥ samyagājñayā suvimuktacittaiḥ |

At one time the Bhagavān was dwelling with the Śākyans, in Kapilavastu, together with five-hundred bhikṣus who were all arhats, whose outflows were extinguished, who had done what had to be done, accomplished what had to be accomplished, laid down the burden, attained their own welfare, whose fetters which bound them were completely destroyed, and whose minds were liberated through right understanding.

tatra bhagavāṁ bhikṣusaṁghasya nirvāṇapratisaṁyuktāṁ dharmikathām kathayati sma |

Therein, the Bhagavān was teaching the bhikṣusaṃgha a Dharma-lecture connected with Nirvāṇa.

api tatradaśamahālokadhātu mahāśākyamahāśākyādevatā sannipatitā bhagavantam upāsate bhikṣusaṁghañ ca |

There too, the Daśamahālokadhātu Great Śākyans and Great Śākyan Devatās had gathered and were attending toward the Bhagavān and the Bhikṣusaṃgha.

atha khalu catasṛṇāṁ brahmalokanivāsikānāṁ devatānāṁ brahmakāyikānām etad abhavat |

At that time, it occurred to the four devatās belonging to the Brahmaloka, belonging to the Beahmakāyika, who said together:

adya khalu bhagavāṁ śākyeṣu viharati vane kāpilavastave sārdhaṁ pañcabhir bhikṣuśataiḥ sarvair arhadbhiḥ pūrvavad yāvad bhikṣusaṁghañ ca |

“Today the Bhagavān is dwelling among the Śākyans in the Kapilavastu Forest, together with five-hundred bhikṣus who are all arhats, (and as before, up to the description given previously), and the bhikṣusaṃgha as well.

yan nu vayaṁ gatvā pratyekapratīkṣā bhagavantaṁ bhikṣusaṁghañ ca gāthābhir abhiṣṭaveyāma |

Let us go there, and each in turn, await the Bhagavān and the Bhikṣusaṃgha, and praise them with verses.”

atha catasro brahmakāyikā devatās tadyathā balavāṁ puruṣaḥ saṁmiṁjitaṁ vā bāhuṁ prasārayet prasāritaṁ vā saṁmiṁjayed evam eva catasro brahmakāyikā devatā brahmaloke antarhitā bhagavataḥ purataḥ pratitasthuḥ |

Then the four Brahmakāyika Devatās, just as a strong man might extend a bent arm or bend an extended arm, in the same way, the four Brahmakāyika Devatās vanished from the Brahmaloka and stood before the Bhagavān.

ekāntasthitā ekā brahmakāyikā devatā tasyāṁ velāyāṁ gāthāṁ babhāṣe ||

Standing to one side, one of the Brahmakāyika Devatās at that time spoke in verse:

mahāsamājaḥ pravaṇe
devakāyāḥ samāgatāḥ |
aparājitasaṁghaṁ hi
draṣṭum abhyāgatā vayam ||

“The Mahāsamāja on the slope has assembled,
Indeed, seeing the Unconquered Saṃgha,
We have come to behold them.”

In English Rhyme:

“The Mahāsamāja stands upon the slope, assembled bright and strong;
The Unconquered Saṃgha to see here, we devas come along.”

dvitīyā brahmakāyikā devatā gāthāṁ babhāṣe ||

A second Brahmakāyika Devatā spoke in verse:

ṛjubhūtena cittena
pradadhaty atra bhikṣavaḥ |
rathīva netrāṇy ādāya
saṁrakṣaṁtīndriyāṇi hi ||

“With an upright mind
The Bhikṣus exert themselves here,
Like a charioteer who grasps the reins
They truly guard the sense faculties.”

In English Rhyme:

“With upright minds the Bhikṣus train,
In vigilance firm do they remain;
Like charioteers who grip the reins,
They guard the indriyas with restrain.”

tṛtīyā brahmakāyikā devatā gāthāṁ babhāṣe ||

A third Brahmakāyika Devatā spoke in verse:

saṁpradālya khalu kīlam aneyā
indrakīlaṁ parighaṁ parikhaṁ ca |
te caranti śuddhā vimlāś ca
nāyakena dāntāḥ śiśunāgāḥ ||

“Having split indeed the stake in this way,
Indra’s Stake, the iron beam, and moat,
They move forth pure and stainless,
Tamed by the Nāyaka like Elephant Calves.”

In English Rhyme:

“Having split the stake and bar away,
Indra’s pillar, beam, and moat’s array;
They move in purity, unsoiled and bright,
Tamed by the Nāyaka, young nāgas bright.”

caturthī brahmakāyikā devatā gāthāṁ babhāṣe ||

The fourth Brahmakāyika Devatā spoke in verse:

ye buddhaṁ śaraṇaṁ yānti
na te gacchanti durgatiṁ |
prahāya mānuṣān kāyān
divān kāyān upāsate ||

“Those who take refuge in the Buddha,
Do not go to woeful destinies;
Having abandoned the human bodies,
They attend upon divine bodies.”

In English Rhyme:

“Take refuge within the Buddha’s name,
Go not to states of woe;
They who forsake their human bodies,
Serve bodies divine, aglow.”

ity uktvā catasro brahmakāyikā devatās tatraiva sthāne ’ntarhitāḥ ||

Having spoken thus, the four Brahmakāyika Devatās vanished from that very place.

atha bhagavāṁ sarvāṁ devapariṣadam avalokya bhikṣūn āmantrayati sma |

Then the Bhagavān, having surveyed the entire deva-assembly, addressed the bhikṣus:

sumahāṁ batāyaṁ bhikṣavo devatāsaṁnipātaḥ sumahāṁ batāyaṁbhikṣavo devatāsaṁnipāto mama pariṣady etarhi |

“Truly great indeed, O Bhikṣus, is this gathering of the assembly of devatās; truly, this is great indeed, O Bhikṣus, this gathering of devatās in my assembly now.

ye ’pi te atīte ’dhvani tathāgatā arhantaḥ samyaksaṁbuddhās teṣāṁ api buddhānāṁ bhagavatāṁ etāvad devatānāṁsaṁnipāto babhūva tadyathā mama pariṣady etarhi |

Even those Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksaṃbuddhas, in former times, — of those Buddha Bhagavāns too — had an occurrence of a gathering of devatās to this extent, just like that which has now occurred in my assembly.

ye pi te anāgāte ’dhvani tathāgatā arhantaḥ samyaksaṁbuddhās teṣām api buddhānāṁ bhagavatām etāvad devatānāṁ saṁnipāto bhaviṣyati tadyathā mama pariṣady etarhi |

Even those Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksaṃbuddhas, in futures times, — of those Buddha Bhagavāns too — will have an occurrence of a gathering of devatās to this extent, just like that which has now occurred in my assembly.”

vakṣyāmi vo bhikṣavo devatānāṁ nāmāni kīrtayiṣyāmi devatānāṁnāmāni | śṛṇuta mama bhāṣitam |

I will speak to you, O Bhikṣus, the names of the Devatās, I will declare the names of the Devatās. Now listen to My speech:

hitātmanaḥ samāhitāḥ |
pṛthaksiṁhāiva …
… pratāpinaḥ |
avadātamanasaḥ śuddhā
viprasannā anāvilāḥ |
śritā devamanuṣyeṣu
yāvad brahm … mṛtyuhāyinaḥ ||

“Those well-intentioned mentally unified beings,
Are majestic like solitary lions,
Pure-minded and purified,
Clear and unstained,
Are those whom dwell among devas and men,
As far as to Brahma,
The Conquerers of death.

śaikṣā dvipañcaśatakaṁ
śatañ ca daśa cāpare |
anekāni sahasrāṇi
daivatāni nyavedayan
anantam api nāmaike
sphuṭāḥ sarvadiśo ’bhavan ||

Two times five-hundred Śaikṣas,
A hundred and ten, or more,
Many thousands of devas were declared—Some could say they were endless—
And became manifest in all directions.

tāṁś ca buddho hy abhijñāya
vyavalokya tathāgataḥ |
athāmantrayati śāstā
śrāvakāñ chāsane ratān ||

The Buddha, having directly understood them,
The Tathāgata, having surveyed them,
The Śāsta then addressed the śrāvakas,
Who delighted in the teachings:

devakāyā abhikrāntā
niśamayata bhikṣavaḥ |
teṣāṁ nāmāni vakṣyāmi
gāthābhir anupūrvaśaḥ |
ekāgramanaso bhūtvā
śṛṇuta mama bhāṣitam
yakṣāṇāṁ saptasāhasrā
vane kāpilavastave |
avabhāsayitvā tiṣṭhanti
venaṁ kāilavastavam ||

“Listen O Bhikṣus for the Deva Retinues have arrived,
For their names in sequential order I shall now declare in verse,
Becoming one-pointed in mind, listen to my speech,

Seven-thousand yakṣas within the forest of Kapilavastu,
Stand and illuminate the Kapilavastu Forest.

te cāpi samitim āyātā
ye caiṣāṁ sahagocarāḥ
ṛddhimanto dyutimanto
varṇavanto yaśasvinaḥ |
vandamānā abhikrāntā
bhikṣuṇāṁ samitiṁ vane ||

And they too have come to this gathering,
Together with those who share their spheres of associations,
Possessed of ṛddhi and resplendence,
They are endowed with beauty and fame.
They have approached and bowed in reverence,
Unto the assembly of bhikṣus in the forest.

sātāgiris trisāhasraḥ
…
[avabhāsayitvā tiṣṭhanti
vanaṁ kāpilavastavam ||]
sa cāpi samitim āyato
ye cāsya sahagocarāḥ
pūrvavat |

Sātāgiri together with three-thousand,
Stand and illuminate the Kapilavastu Forest.
He too has come to the assembly with those who share his sphere of associations.

ṣatṣāhasrā haimavatāḥ
sarve nānātvavarṇinaḥ |
avabhāsayitvā tiṣṭhanti
venaṁ kāpilavastavaṁ ||
te cāpi samitim āyātā
ye caiṣāṁ sahagocarāḥ
pūrvavat |

Haimavata together with Six-thousand,
All of various forms,
Stand and illuminate the Kapilavastu Forest.
They too have come to the assembly with those who share their same spheres of associations, just as those before.

ity ete ṣoḍaśa yakṣasahasrāḥ
sarve nānātvavarṇinaḥ
avabhāsayitvā tiṣṭhanti
venaṁ kāpilavastavam ||
te cāpi samitim āyātā
ye caiṣāṁ sahagocarāḥ
pūrvavat |

Thus, these sixteen-thousand yakṣas,
All of various forms,
Stand and illuminate the Kapilavastu Forest.
They too have come to the assembly,
With those who share their spheres of associations, just as those before.

viśamitraḥ pañcaśato
viśvadevo maharddhikaḥ
avabhāsayitvā tiṣṭhanti
vanaṁ kāpilavastavam ||
te cāpi samitim āyātā
ye caiṣāṁ sahagocarāḥ
pūrvavat |

Viśvamitra with five-hundred Viśvadevas of Maharddhis,
Stood and illuminated the Kapilavastu Forest.
They too came have come to the assembly,
With those who share their spheres of associations, just as those before.

kumbhīro yakṣo rājagṛhe
vipule ’smiṁ nivāsikaḥ
bhūyaḥ śatasahasreṇa
yakṣāṇāṁ paryupāsyate
te cāpi samitim āyātā
pūrvavat |

Kumbhīra, the Yakṣa of Rājagṛha,
The resident within this Mt. Vipula,
Is attended by a further hundred-thousand yakṣas,
They too have come to this assembly, as those before.

pūrvān diśam abhipālayati
rājā mahārājā |
gandharvādhipatī rājā
dhṛtirāṣṭra iti nāma sa
ramate ’sau nṛttagītena
jñātibhiḥ sahitaḥ sadā |
sa cāpi samitim āyāto
pūrvavat |

The one who guards the eastern direction,
The Rāja, the Mahārāja,
The Lord of Gandharvas,
Rāja Dhṛtarāṣṭra is his name.
He delights in song and dance,
Ever-accompanied by his kin.
He too has come to the assembly, as those before.”

[dakṣiṇān diśam abhipālayati
rājā mahārājā
kuṁbhāṇḍādhipatī rājā
virūḍhaka iti nāma sa
ramate ’sau nṛttagītena
jñātibhiḥ sahitaḥ sadā |
sa cāpi samitim āyāto
pūrvavat |]

The one who guards the southern direction,
The Rāja, the Mahārāja,
The Lord of Kumbhāṇḍas,
Rāja Virūḍhaka is his name.
He delights in song and dance,
Ever-accompanied by his kin.
He too has come to this assembly, as those before.

paścimān diśam abhipālayati
rājā mahārājā
nāgānām adhipatī rājā
virūpākṣa iti nāma sa
ramate ’sau nṛttagītena
jñātibhiḥ sahitaḥ sadā
sa cāpi samitim āyāto
purvavat |

The one who guards the western direction,
The Rāja, the Mahārāja,
The Lord of Nāgas,
Rāja Virūpākṣa is his name.
He delights in song and dance,
Ever-accompanied by his kin.
He too has come to this assembly, as those before.

uttarān diśam abhipālayati
rājā mahārājā
yakṣāṇām adhipatī rājā
kubera iti nāma sa
ramte ’sau nṛttagītena
jñātibhiḥ sahitaḥ sadā
sa cāpi samitim āyāto
pūrvavat |

The one who guards the northern direction,
The Rāja, the Mahārāja,
The Lord of Yakṣas,
Rāja Kubera is his name.
He delights in song and dance,
Ever-accompanied by his kin.
He too has come to this assembly, as those before.

purastime ti dhṛtirāṣṭro
dakṣiṇe ti virūḍhakaḥ |
paścime ti virūpākṣaḥ
kuberaś cottaran diśi ||
catvāra ete mahārājā
lokapālā yaśasvinaḥ
diśaś catasraḥ pālayanti
maharddhikā mahābalāḥ
te cāpi samitim āyātā
pūrvavat |

Dhṛtarāṣṭra of the East,
Virūḍhaka of the South,
Virūpākṣa of the West,
And Kubera of the North.
These Four Mahārājas,
The Famed Lokapālas,
They guard the four quarters,
Great in ṛddhi and bala.
They too have come to this assembly, as those before.

teṣāṁ māyāvino dāsāḥ
prāptā vañcakāḥ śaṭhāḥ
māyā kiṭiś ca vikiṭiś ca
bhṛguś ca bhṛkuṭinyā saha
ṛddhiguṇāṁ darśayaṁtas
tadā saṁbahucaitrike
te cāpi samitim āyātā
pūrvavat |

Their attendants possessed of illusions,
Those deceivers and tricksters have arrived.
Māyā, Kiṭi, Vikiṭi, and Bhṛgu together with Bhṛkutī,
At that time they display their qualities of ṛddhi with their manifold illusory creations.
They too have come to the assembly, just as those before.

ime py atra samabhikrāntā yakṣā mahāyakṣāḥ yakṣasenāpatayaḥ senāyā ye parināyakās tadyathā indraḥ somo varuṇaḥ prajāpatiḥ pūrvavat yathātānāṭike yāvat triphalī ca trikaṇṭhakī | te cāpi samitim āyātā pūrvavat |

And these too have arrived here,
These Yakṣas and Mahāyakṣas,
These Commanders of Yakṣa Armies,
Who are the Leaders of that Army,
Namely:
Indra, Soma, Varuṇa, and Prajāpati,
Just as those before,
As in the Āṭānāṭika,
As far as Triphalī and Trikaṇṭhakī,
They too had come to this assembly, just as those before.

āgataḥ sahabhuṁ nāgo
vaiśālaś cāpi takṣakaḥ
kambalāśvataraḥ prāptaḥ
prajāguś ca guṇā saha |
saudāsako dhṛtirāṣṭro
… pati kuñjarāḥ
airāvaṇo mahābhīṣmaḥ
prāpto nāgo yaśasvī mamā …
te cāpi samitim āyātā
pūrvavat |

Here too arrived the Co-born Nāgas
Vaiśāla and Takṣaka too,
Kambala and Aśvatara have arrived,
Prajāgu together with his attendants Saudāsaka and Dhṛtarāṣṭra,
The Patikuñjaras named Airāvana and Mahābhīṣma, those famed Nāgas have arrived here.
They too have come to this assembly, as those before.

yo nāgarājaṁ harati prasahya
balavāṁ dvijaḥ pakṣī viśuddhacakṣuḥ
vaihāyasena vanam abhyupāgataś
citraṁ suvaṇī iti tasya nāma |
abhayaṁ tatra nāgarājñām
adāt sa suparṇitaḥ
kṣemam akārṣīc chāstā
ślakṣṇāsu vācāsu muditāsu
tatraiva buddhaṁ śaranaṁ upāgataḥ ||
sa cāpi samitim āyāto
pūrvavat |

He Who is the Forceful Seizer of Nāga-Kings,
The Powerful Twice-Born Bird of Pure Vision,
He has arrived at the forest through the sky
His name is Citraṃsuvarṇī.
He gave fearlessness to the Nāga Kings,
He the Suparṇita,
For the Śāsta brought about welfare with gentle and pleasing words,
And he had taken refuge in the Buddha.
He too has come to the assembly, just as those before.

vijitā vajrahastena
samudram asurāḥ śritāḥ |
…
… ||
sucitro vemacitraś ca
prahlādo mucilas tathā |
śataṁ ca baḍiputrāṇāṁ
sarve vairocanāmakāḥ ||
.. hi baḍisenāṁ
rāhur bhadram upāgataḥ |
samayas te mahāvīra
bhikṣūṇāṁ samitim vane ||
te cāpi samitim āyātā
pūrvavat |

The Asuras dwelling in the samudra who were conquered by the Vajrahasta,
Sucitra and Vemacitra,
Prahlāda and Mucila,
All of the hundred sons of Baḍin named Vairochana too,
Even Rāhu had approached Baḍin’s army in peace saying:
“It is the time of the Mahāvīra’s Bhikṣusaṃgha assembly in the forest.”
And so they too have come to the assembly, as those before.

varuṇā vāruṇī cāpi
kṣaumātho pṛṣṭhato gatā
maitrī varuṇikā cāpi
prāptā devī yaśasvinī |
pṛthivī ca devā āpaś ca
vāyur devaś ca pāvakaḥ ||
daśaite daśakāḥ kāyāḥ
sarve nānātvavarṇinaḥ |
avabhāsayitvā tiṣṭhanti
vanaṁ kāpilavastavam ||
te cāpi samitim āyātā
pūrvavat

Varuṇa and Vāruṇī too,
Kṣaumā with Attendants Behind,
The Famed Devīs called Maitrī and Varuṇīkā,
The Devas Pṛthvī, Āpa, Vāyu, and the Deva Pāvaka came too.
All these ten decads of various formed hosts,
They stood and illuminated the Forest of Kapilavastu.
They too came to the assembly, as those before.

viṣṇuś ca devaḥ sahalī ca deva
āgataś ca yama … |
candropaniṣado devāś
candram eva puraskṛtya ||
sūryopaniṣado devāḥ
sūryam eva puraskṛtya |
nakṣatrāṇi puraskṛtya
prāptaḥ mandavalāhakāḥ
maghavāṁ sarva …
prāptaḥ śakraḥ purandaraḥ |
daśaite daśakāḥ kāyāḥ
pūrvavat |

Viṣṇu, Deva Sahalī, and the Deva Yama have arrived,
The Devas of the Candropaṇiṣads
Together with Candra in front,
The Devas of the Sūryopaṇiṣads
Together with Sūrya in front,
The Nakṣatras with the Mandavalāhakas in front,
They have arrived with the
Maghavān Śakra Purandara,
These ten decads of hosts have all arrived, just as those before.

āgatā sabhikā devī
jvaladarciḥśikhopamā |
ariṣṭikā ca romā ca
umā puṣpanivāsinī ||
carakā subaddhakakṣā
acyutāś cāpi anekaśaḥ
pradyumnaḥ svātikā prāptā
yā diśo hy abhivarṣati ||
daśaite daśakāḥ kāyāḥ
pūrvavat |

Here too arrived the Devī Sabhikā Who Resembles the Blaze at the Tip of Flame,
Ariṣṭikā, Romā, Umā, and Puṣpanivāsinī,
The countless Carakas, Subaddhakākṣas, and Acyutas too,
They Who Rain Upon all Directions called Pradyumna and Svātikā.
These ten decads of hosts have all arrived, as those before.

śuklā kaḍambā karuṇā
prāptā nīlakavāsinī |
avadātakeśā pramukhī
prāptā pītakavāsinī |
sadāmattā hāritakā
miśrikāś cāpy anekaśaḥ |
śuddhakā rucikā caiva
prāptā devā yaśasvinaḥ ||
daśaite daśakāḥ kāyāḥ
pūrvavat |

Śuklā, Kadambā, Karuṇā, and Nīlakavāsinī,
The Leaders Avadātakeśā and Pītakavāsinī too have arrived,
The countless Sadāmattas, Hāritakas, and Miśrikas too,
The Famed Devas called Śuddhikā and Rucikā.
These ten decads of hosts have all arrived, just as those before.

kṣemakās tuṣitā yāmāḥ
kṛṣṇuktāś cāpy anekaśaḥ |
lumbinī lumbinīśreṣṭhā
jyotirnāmā ca svāśiṣā |
nirmāṇaratayaḥ prāptā
athāpi vaśavartinaḥ ||
daśaite daśakāḥ kāyāḥ
pūrvavat |

The countless Kṣemakas, Tuṣitas, Yāmas, and Kṛṣṇuktas too,
Lumbinīs, Lumibinīśreṣṭhās, Jyotirnāmās, and Svāśiṣās,
The Nirmāṇaratins and Vaśavartins have arrived too.
These ten decads of hosts have all arrived, just as those before.

daśa vai tv īśvarāḥ prāptāḥ
pratyekaṁ vaśavartinaḥ |
sahasrabrahmalokānāṁ
mahābrahmā nirucyate |
sanatkumāras tiṣyaś ca
ṛddhimadbhiḥ sutaiḥ saha ||
te cāpi samitim āyātā
pūrvavat |

Ten however are the Īśvaras and Solitary Vaśavartins who have arrived,
Together with He Who is Called the Mahābrahma of the Thousand Brahmalokas,
As well as Sanatkumāra and Tiṣya together with their sons possessed of great ṛddhi.
These ten decads of hosts have all arrived, just as those before.

teṣāñ ca pṛṣṭhataḥ prāptā
hāritī vaśavartinī |
uttamā varṇarūpeṇa
putrebhiḥ parivāritā ||
sā cāpi samitim āyātā
pūrvavat |

Following behind them, Hāritī Vaśavartinī has arrived,
She of Supreme Beauty, is surrounded by her sons.
She too has come to this assembly, just as those before.

ime ca sarve ’bhikrāntāḥ
sendrā devāḥ sa-īśānāḥ
saprajāpatayaḥ |
bhikṣavo ’py atrābhikrāntāḥ
paśya kṛṣṇasya mantritam
idaṁ gṛhṇīta bandhadhvaṁ
rāgeṇa bhadram astu vaḥ |
parivārya samantāc ca
maitraṁ jīvantam utsṛjata ||

All of these Devas have arrived,
Those together with Indra, Īśāna, and Prajāpati.
The Bhikṣus here have also arrived.”

[Then came Mahāsena, the Leader of the Army of the Māra called Kṛṣṇa:]

“Behold the Strategem of Kṛṣṇa!
Let us take them and fasten them!
Through desire may of all them be bound!
Encircle them on all sides!
Leave none of them alive!”

iti tatra mahāsenaḥ
kṛṣṇa senām acūcudat |
svayaṁ cāpy abhyudāvṛttaḥ
saṁkruddho ’py asvayaṁvaśaḥ ||
pāninā pṛthivīṁ hatvā
kṛtvā śabdaṁ subhairavam |
atha prāvarṣayad devam
abhramāliṁ savidyutam ||

Therein, the Mahāsena drove forward the Army of Kṛṣṇa,
And he himself surged forward,
Enraged and lost of self-control.
He struck the earth with his hand,
Made a fearsome sound,
And then caused forth a divine storm,
With masses of clouds and lightning.

tāṁś ca buddho hy abhijñāya
vyavalokya tathāgataḥ |
athāmantrayati śāstā
śrāvakāñ chāsane ratān ||

Then the Buddha having directly understood them,
The Tathāgata having surveyed them,
The Śāsta addressed the śrāvakas devoted to the teachings:

mārasainyam abhikrāntaṁ
niśamayata bhikṣavaḥ |
ātaptakāriṇas te ’pi
śrutvā buddhasya bhāṣitam |
vītarāgaṁ hi taṁ matvā
tasya romāṇi neñjaṁti ||

“O Bhikṣus behold that Māra’s army has arrived,
But those ascetics who have heard the Buddha’s Speech,
Know that He is free of desire, and so their hairs do not tremble.”

te cāpi vijitasaṁgrāmā
bhayābhītā yaśasvinaḥ |
modante saha śiṣyebhiḥ
śrāvakās te jinātmajāḥ ||

And so having conquered the battle,
Having transcended fear and fame,
Those Śrāvaka Sons of the Jina.
Rejoiced together with their disciples.

idam avocad bhagavām āptamanasas te bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan ||

The Bhagavān having spoken this, those Bhikṣus Purified in Mind rejoiced in the Bhagavān’s speech.

a[nta]roddānam ||
varūṇā viṣṇu sabhikā śuklā śyāmā ca kṣemakāḥ ||

The Antaroddānam:
Varuṇa, Viṣṇu, Sabhikā, Śukla, Śyāma, and the Kṣemakas.

mahāsamājasūtraṁ samāptaḥ samāptañ ca iti | sādhū ||

Thus ends the Mahāsamāja Sūtra. Sādhū!
